In each culture, this vital force known by different names, Indians called it ‘Prana’, In Greek it is known as ‘Pneuma’ as in Chinese culture it is known as ‘Qi’ or Chi.
It is believed that the concept of Chi is beyond explanation and difficult to describe. There are two main reason for that, First, it is believed that this energy can’t be seen but can feel. Second, for each living thing, characteristics and flow of Chi is different. But according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TMC) Chi can be divided into two major categories:
- Physical Qi that we receive through Air, Water, and Food.
- The energy or the vital fluid that flows within our body.
This classification comes from the Chinese concept of Yin-Yang. This concept represents the positive and negative balance of the universe.
To understand the concept of Qi first you have to understand the concept of Yin-Yang. Yin-Yang represents the positive and negative balance of the universe like the Indian concept of Shiv- shakti. The same aspects can be applied to the two forms of Qi.
